Paul |
As the writer of most of the New Testament, Paul is a key character in the story. Once a zealot who actively persecuted and killed Christians, he was transformed by Jesus himself and given the specific task of taking the message outside of the Jewish nation and proclaiming that the rest of the world could be in on God's salvation plan. He is beaten, jailed, starved, threatened, shipwrecked and ultimately killed but along the way he records for us the most comprehensive statements on how this Christianity thing is supposed to work. Peter |
Peter is one of the most colourful and eventful characters of the New Testament. As one of Jesus closest friends he is credited with walking on water, witnessing the transfiguration, slashing off an aggressors ear, openly denying and deserting Jesus and ultimately being the one trusted to lead the early church into eternity. Peter is a man's man with an immensely loyal heart. This week Randy and Steve look at this big fisherman through slightly different eyes. John the Baptist |
The people of Israel hadn’t heard from God in 400 years. Ten generations had passed and no-one had spoken confidently for God. All they had was some older prophecies about a Messiah who would save them from their turmoil and captivity. Every group and sect in Judaism claimed the Messiah would come from them and side with them… Finally God speaks. He sends them their messenger. The ultimate Hippie – John the Baptist. Jeremiah |
Jeremiah is an Old Testament Prophet. He is given the task by God of informing the Israelites both that they are going to be destroyed by a neighbouring army and also that their best course of action is surrender. You can imagine that this news was not taken well and in fact was considered treason by the vast majority of his countrymen. The book of Jeremiah tells his story and the next book of Lamentations records his lament at being 'set up' by God to fail. This week Steve and Randy take a look at what happens when God asks you to do something, which is you know is not going to workout well. David |
David is still considered the greatest King of Israel. Apart from defeating Goliath as a boy, writing the majority of the Psalms, having an affair with an army wife and arranging for her husband to be murdered, David is credited with turning Israel from a bunch of loosely associated tribes into a great nation centered around Jerusalem. He is the only man in the Bible whom God calls, ‘a man after God’s own heart’. He is truly both Hero and Villain and is a key character in the ongoing story of God’s redemption of the world. Deborah, Rahab and Ruth |
The ancient Middle East was a culture dominated by men. Many of the stories of God's interaction with the Israelites reflect this culture and thus we find relatively few women who play significant leadership roles in the ongoing story. This week Randy and Steve discuss three extremely different and important women whom God used to continue his work, despite the biases of the surrounding culture.
